Overview

Desertmartin Accordion Band will mark its 65th anniversary in 2026. It is notable that fifteen years have passed since the publication of Dorothy Fleming's book commemorating the band's 50th anniversary. Compiled in 2011, Mrs Fleming's work traces the band's evolution from its origins as a flute band through its transition to an accordion band in 1961. The original publication provides a detailed account of the band's history, highlighting key facts and figures and recognizing the individuals who played significant roles in its development. However, my intention for this book was to distinguish it by prioritising the narratives, individuals, and personalities over statistics and data, as these elements form the true foundation of lasting memories through stories, poetry, photographs, and verse. This book examines the Desertmartin Accordion Band in its current context, highlighting the individuals involved and the family's traditions that are integral to its identity.
