Overview

First Experiences is an exciting series portraying young children's very first experience of nursery school, time with grandparents and other events. The first time for anything can be daunting, and these books set out to familiarise children, through simple read-aloud words and beautiful photos, with what seems at first unfamiliar but will eventually become a routine part of everyday life. Deron and his mum get ready for his first day at a Ghanaian nursery school. When theya rrive, he meets his teacher and the other children, does a bit of writing, sings and dances, has lunch and a little rest - and when he gets home, he can't wait to go back again and play with his new friends.

This is just one in a brilliant series of books that give children a very tangible idea of what life is like for children and families in very different parts of the world... such books should be implicit in your setting for children to readily access and choose freely on a daily basis because they support cultural diversity and inclusion in a very positive way. Early Years Educator Sharing the experiences of these activities in an African setting allowing children to capture the universality of such first experiences. Armadillo Magazine These are ideal resources that offer a real glimpse into what life is like for other children and families in other parts of the world, in terms of things that we have in common but that are different, such as food, family, education, animals/pets and much more. Early Years Educator Well worth having at home, in the classroom or the library! School Librarian A good, well produced title to have to have in early years to help broaden children's awareness of life in another country. Books for Keeps Shortlisted: Warm colourful illustrations with much interesting detail combine with a simple text to give a vivid account of four year old Deron's first day at nursery school... This book will appeal to any child about to start chool in any country and will provide a starting point for reassuring conversations. English 4-11 Book Awards
