"English Summary The center of power and hub of the empire, a ruler's home and retreat, an employer of hundreds of servants and officials - these are but a few initial associations with the term ""palace"". However, a ""palace"" is more than just the building in which a ruler resides, represents and administers. It represents a significant economic factor and at the same time a finely tuned hierarchical system of secular and spiritual order, to some extent a reflection of society and at the same time a cosmos in its own right; a place for serious politics as well as harem intrigue and succession feuds.
