OverviewBernhard Seidler examines the representations of sick rulers in Western Europe from the 15th to the 18th century. Whether pope, emperor or prince, these images present the powerful from their frail side. They emphasise the significance of their weak bodies for the political community and question the tension between being sick and in power. By showing rulers who have been amputated, are mentally ill or have eye damage, the pictures develop narratives that showcase their bodies with new normative standards. They give the suffering sovereigns a purposeful role - as those tested in war, tried by God, or hardworking despite pain. Thus, they figure as a means of communication between health and political crisis.
