Durch die geschickte Heiratspolitik des Kaisers Maximilian I. gelangten die Habsburger auf den kastilischen Thron. Als dann Karl V. 1516 von seinem Großvater Ferdinand die Krone Aragon erbte, wurden die beiden Reiche politisch vereint und das Königreich Kastilien verlor seine Eigenständigkeit.
