Overview

Wireless internet service providers (WISPs) are not the same as wireless local area networks (WLANs). WLANs are closed systems intended to be used only by members of a specific business or other organization, while WISPs are open systems available to the public on a free basis (such as the free WiFi access offered by libraries, coffeeshops and restaurants, hotels, etc.), on an ad-supported basis (such as Google's new WiFi service), or on a subscription plan like DSL and cable internet. This comprehensive guide covers the technical, legal and regulatory, organizational, financial, and operational details of planning, implementing, and managing a free or for-profit WISP. Unlike WLAN titles which concentrate on 2.4 GHz technology, this book covers RF/wireless technology for 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.2 GHz, and 5.8 GHz systems. There is special attention given to the pragmatic details necessary for a successful WISP - such as site and antenna selection, connecting cables, and proper power levels - as well as details on security issues, billing and user authentication techniques, government regulations, and other issues essential for useful WISPs. The author has planned and implemented dozens of WISPs and conducts the well-known WISP Bootcamps for Part-15.org, the national association of WISP owners/operators. This book sarts with the basics and guides the reader through to the more advanced topics. It contains all of the advice needed to become a successful independent wireless internet service provider. It explains how to extend WISP coverage and operating range through use of hotspots and WiPOPs (wireless points of presence).
