OverviewThis paper explores the financial habits and constraints of rural women in Mozambique and Tanzania, both at country and village level, with the aim of answering how, and why, they differ from those of their male counterparts. The analyses carried out for both countries depict a scenario in which rural men and women are set on divergent development trajectories: as household wealth increases, men attain higher levels of education and asset ownership, as well as better access to identification documents and the ability to diversify their incomes. All of these factors represent, at the same time, both a cause and consequence of greater access to formal financial services. The report suggests that fostering gender-sensitive financial inclusion will require coordinated interventions in relation to different imbalances, bringing substantial reform to elements such as access to identification documents, land titling, know-your-customer regulation, financial education, ingrained socio-cultural norms and many other aspects..
