OverviewDeceptions, Lies, and Alibis is a compendium of mostly true tales from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century history of the Arizona and New Mexico Territories featuring frustrated schemes, misdirected machinations, and interrupted intentions. Peopling these pages are some of the southwest's best and least known outlaws, swindlers, and pranksters accompanied by a host of stymied sheriffs, disrespected judges, enraged editors, jilted sweethearts, malcontents, miners, madams, and frustrated citizens forced to take matters into their own hands. Most of these stories are prefaced with the pertinent factual background, often noting controversies and contradictions in the historical records. The stories are then told in original western poetry. The overall tenor of the poetry is tongue-in-cheek, but appropriate gravitas is invoked in the stories about more serious events.
