Author Information

Author of novels, poetry, short stories, and newspaper editor Lurana W. Sheldon (after marriage, Ferris; pen names, Richard Hackstaff, Stanley Norris, Grace Shirley). She was born in Hadlyme, Connecticut, on April 11, 1862. She said that she has worked in fifteen distinct and entirely diverse professions to support herself, including bookkeeping, journalism, employment in a chemical laboratory, purchasing grocery, and story writing. She advocated for women's suffrage and was anti-prohibition. Sheldon was the first poet in the US to contribute to the fight for birth control. Sheldon worked for over seven years at hospitals, including two years at the Woman's Medical College of the New York Infirmary, where he assisted doctors in a variety of ways. Sheldon visited the United States, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland despite her unwell state. She married Judge Isaac F. Ferris of York County, Maine, who had previously worked as a journalist, on November 20, 1904 (or November 20, 1903). She passed away childless on June 11, 1945 in Maine.
