Dear Dad: Letters from the Heart

Overview

'Dear Dad' is about the special relationships between fathers and daughters told through a series of letters from women to their fathers, interviews with TV celebrities, and the author's recollections of her own father. The importance of the influence that a father has on his daughter is becoming increasingly acknowledged and documented as shown by recent published research. Despite the special bond that is common between father and daughter, all too often the true nature of that bond remains unexpressed. Sadly some women never take the opportunity to tell their dads just how they feel; many of the letters in this book were written after the father's death. The book has been written to inspire both daughters and fathers to share their feelings with one another while they can - be they feelings of gratitude, love or resentment. It may help to bridge the sometimes, inevitable gap between a father and a daughter. At the same time, much of what is said will resonate and it is an emotional read, both happy and sad, filled with stories that we can all identify with. 'Dear Dad' was inspired by a conversation between the author and a male friend who felt he was losing touch with his daughter. Just as it will encourage daughters to speak more often and more candidly with their fathers, so it will also help fathers to open up to their daughters. The book's breadth of appeal is also strengthened by the fact that the letters in it have been written by women from a wide variety of ages and cultural backgrounds. This also means that it deals with a range of issues, from domestic violence to adjusting to life in another country.

Author Information

Virginia was born and grew up in the north side of Dublin, the youngest of eight children, in a typical working class Catholic family where, not surprisingly, both money and the room to have one's own space were scarce. Her father had a strong work ethic and her mother a strong spiritual side and Virginia has been deeply influenced by both these aspects of her parents' characters. Singing and writing songs from the age of 11, she dreamed of joining a band and making her living from her music and so aged 19 moved to London to pursue this dream. In spite of working hard, doing everything from singing in a band, busking on the underground for fun and performing gigs at the weekend, that dream remains to be realised. Faced with the choice of paying the rent or her music, at 21 she fell quite by accident into the corporate world. She spent the next 16 years in telecommunications, building a successful corporate career finding it both financially and holistically rewarding; managing major projects, diverse teams and travelling internationally. In this very fast paced and demanding customer environment, Virginia became increasingly interested in personal and professional motivation. Driven by a desire to improve her own performance, she studied neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), which enables you to develop a deeper understanding about how and why people do what they do, the way they do it and how we make sense of our external experience from within ourselves. Starting in 2001 and over a period of 2 years, she became a Master NLP Practitioner and Coach and began coaching people in relation to their personal and professional goals and dreams; working with both individuals and groups, supporting their desire to change and to maximise their potential and overcome limiting beliefs and behaviours.
