What she finds leads her all the way to her own boss, the chief of police. Both hunter and hunted, Miranda will soon learns that the only difference between justice and revenge is which side of the gun you're on. Sam Connor has seen war and violence, but nothing has prepared him for the firestorm that has been unleashed in the college town of Sparta, Ohio. The deeper he and his colleague Miranda investigate, the more bodies seem to pile up. On top of it all, a festival at the town's college is in the sights of extremists preaching the word of hate. Sam doesn't know who to trust anymore, but if he wants to survive the days of reckoning that lie ahead, he'll need to learn that those closest to him are the ones who can hurt him the most.
