Davidson's Inlet

Overview

The mystery begins early one morning in the lakeside home of Jim and Kate Stanley which is beautifully situated in Michigan's upper peninsula. Jim, a semi-retired accountant discovers that some of his client's files have been stolen. Kate, a columnist for The Chicago Tribune, finds that the phone is dead. An unfortunate quarrel breaks out and Jim takes the evening train to Chicago. During the night, he has a torrid sexcapade with Samantha, a gorgeous women whom he met in the bar car. Next day, after a business meeting, Jim and one of his clients hit some of the well known bars on Chicago's Division Street. Jim spots a young woman, Maria, who waited on him and his wife earlier in the summer. She misinterprets his approaches and has him thrown out of Butch McQuires. Later that night, her dead body is found behind a dumpster in an alley close by. She had been raped and beaten. Jim is a suspect. His wife has her own fling with Samantha when she follows Jim to Chicago where she tries to help him during the police investigation and the subsequent trial which pits the White Knight Randolph Hamilton Clifford against the Black Majesty of Maxwell Lowden Taylor. During the trial, police corruption on a massive scale is uncovered.
