David Died Last Night: Talking to Children About Death

Overview

When four-year-old David died following a short battle with leukemia, his preschool teacher, Robin, was faced with telling his classmates about his death. She didn't know what words to use, only that she had to be fully open to her young students' questions and let them guide the conversation. Here, David's mother and author Carol Carlson, tells their story. The questions asked by the children in this book are just some of those asked by the boys and girls in the real David's Montessori preschool class. Following the children's story is a section for adults-parents, teachers, counselors, or other loved ones-offering tips and guidance for continuing the conversation beyond this book. Come join the circle of David's friends as Miss Robin tells of his death with sensitivity, tenderness, and complete honesty. Listen in as the children share their feelings of sadness and express their natural curiosity about the seldom discussed topics of death, burial, and cremation. Sit with them as they learn what happens when death occurs and find comfort and understanding together. Allow this story to set the tone and guide you through your own difficult conversations with the children in your life. Allow them to experience grief and seek their own understanding with guidance from David's friends.
