Overview

A new client with striking similarities to her own horrific circumstances. Will this be the secret to finally healing her own wounds? As a child, Heawon Hake endured hellish conditions. So when she left South Korea as a young adult, the studious woman immersed herself in a long career dedicated to helping people through her empathic psychotherapy. But when she took on a client who had practiced dying her entire life, the successful counselor found herself reliving years of abuse. In a heartbreaking and raw account of how her own painful history resurfaced after interactions with an eerily similar patient, Heawon Hake brings to light the frank process that helped her unravel a horrific upbringing. And as readers embark on a deeply personal story that peels back layers of self-protection, they'll emerge triumphant and inspired to take on an often confounding world. Daughter of Korean Freud is a compelling and intense memoir. If you like unforgettable journeys, unwavering self-reflection, and profound emotional awakenings, then you'll love Heawon Hake's real-life K-drama.

Reviews

"""A provocative, gripping, well-told, and cathartic memoir...offering a road map for healing from trauma."" -Jennifer Gimenez, supermodel, actor, and mental health/recovery activist ""This book is a monumental gift to everyone who is or loves someone living with the fallout from intergenerational trauma. Like the K-drama from which it draws its inspiration, Daughter of Korean Freud is full of twists and turns even as it gives an unwavering view of a path toward healing. Hake, who has served as a guiding light for her clients for a long time, has shared the power of self-healing by telling her own story with her unforgettable book."" -Alison O'Reilly Poage, library director, Seminary of the Southwest ""A heartbreaking but inspirational journey about overcoming the deep, unjust wounds of a horrific childhood. Heawon Hake's story proves the truth of Nietzsche's adage, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.' Highly recommend!"" -Suzanne McKenna Link, author of contemporary fiction and romance ""Heawon Hake's story is written with such raw intensity it touches all of your emotions. Instead of being destroyed by their experiences, Heawon and Woo-ri persisted and thrived. A testament of soul-searching survival and renewal, Daughter of Korean Freud is ultimately not about forgiving your abuser, but learning to love yourself."" -Marjorie Peter, MS Ed, SBL/SDL ""'He's right to ignore the chaos...' This line grabbed me and pulled me into Heawon Hake's fascinating memoir, Daughter of Korean Freud. Hake invites us into Woo-ri's world, which is so unimaginable and confounding, yet she somehow stays afloat through the chaos. Reading this memoir feels like a privilege, as it allows us into a private hell-but also a triumphant journey and incredible emergence into freedom."" -Robin McKinnon, MS Ed, LCSW ""This book touched the depths of my soul. Heawon Hake's poignant description of a young girl who feels invisible while suffering unspeakable abuse at the hands of a loved one is balanced by her zest and determination for life and love. The approach to storytelling, through ongoing conversations Hake had with a friend and with a client, brings the richness of the characters to life. An unexpected plot twist at the end is both brilliant and jaw-dropping. An absolute treasure of a book."" -Karen McMahon, CEO, Journey Beyond Coaching"
