Overview

Heterozyklische Verbindung, bei der Benzol mit einem Pyrrolring verschmolzen ist. Es wurde erstmals 1866 von Baeyer bei der Erforschung der Struktur des natürlichen Farbstoffs Indigo identifiziert. Das Indol-Pharmakophor ist ein allgegenwärtiger Bestandteil vieler Naturprodukte, darunter Pflanzenhormone (Indol-3-Essigsäure), einige tierische Hormone wie Melatonin und Serotonin und viele Alkaloide wie Vinblastin, Vincristin, Vindesin, Vinorelbin, Ajmalin und Physostigmin. Ebenso ist es Hauptbestandteil mehrerer synthetischer Arzneimittel wie Indomethacin, Fluvastatin, Zafirlukast und Ondansetron.
