OverviewIn this final volume, Peggy and George eagerly anticipate the war's end and their reunion. With each Allied victory the couple dares to hope their separation may only last a few months more. But those months pass. Germany surrenders, then Japan, and George's service seems to stretch on interminably. However, with the end of the war comes the lifting of censorship and George writes with abandon in these letters, revealing his thoughts on his companions, their superior officers, and the projects that have consumed the last two years of his life. Meanwhile, Peggy dutifully documents the children's milestones of loose teeth and first days of school, careful not to exclude the family's misadventures which range in severity from fights, scrapes, and falls to a garage fire. Footnotes again provide additional information for the reader but unique to this volume is an epilogue where the voices of Peggy and George's children and grandchildren bring the couple's legacy into the present.
