He also served as executive director of the the Institute for Food and Development Policy (Food First) in Oakland, California from 1990-94. He is the author of a number of other books including A Siamese Tragedy: Development and Disintegration in Modern Thailand (1998), co-authored with Shea Cunningham and Likheng Po.
