Dancing up a swarm: Book One of the Honey Bee Trilogy

Overview

Join Beatrice and her honeybee friends, Iambe and Abby, on an unforgettable journey to uncover the mysteries of swarming. ""Bea remembers the first time she found Abby dancing. She could see Abby in the sun's rays. She could feel Abby's dance vibrating through the air in the honeycomb she stood on. Abby danced an oval going eastward then an oval going westward. She stretched a circle into an oval to let foragers know that nectar was about 80 metres away."" But as the bees prepare to swarm, tensions rise, and secrets are revealed. Can Beatrice and her friends decipher the secrets of the elusive waggle dance? Can they understand the intricate workings of a quorum? And why does the beekeeper put the queen bee in a cage? Author Information

Dr. Patricia Laing is an anthropologist, public speaker, passionate beekeeper, and now the author of a children's book. She lives with her bees in the Akatarawa Valley, New Zealand on a property that her ancestors first settled in 1875. A granddaughter who lives with her in their three-generation household is the inspiration for writing these children's books about honey bees, 'The Honey Bee Trilogy'. When she is not tending the honey bees, chickens, or food forest, Patricia spends her time advocating for bees, exploring the healing properties of herbal remedies and honey, and working with the local landowners to preserve indigenous biodiversity. Nicola Kinloch is a picture book illustrator and fine artist, who weaves curiosity and a love for nature into every page. Her illustration debut picture book, Dancing up a Swarm, a collaboration with Author Patricia Laing invites young readers to explore the secret life of honey bees. It celebrates a passion for imagination and connects young readers to the natural world. Nicola honed her craft at RMIT University with an Advanced Multimedia Diploma and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography. Her illustrations combine a passion for image-making and storytelling with a deep appreciation for the natural world. When not immersed in her sketchbook, she can often be found exploring the outdoors with a coffee in one hand and a camera in the other.
