Reviews

This book is one of the Sports Stars Who Care series. It describes the life of young Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and includes information about his grandfather Ralph Earnhardt who was a winning stock car racer in the mid-twentieth century, and famous father Dale, Sr., whose NASCAR wins and aggressive driving style made him a stock car legend. In 2001 Dale, Sr., was killed while racing in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. Information about the three is rather disjointed in the opening chapter and the book tries to cover too much factual material that could have better been placed in sidebars. Despite the subtitle, his caring seems an afterthought. Although coverage of his racing skills is plentiful, only two sentences plus a website address are devoted to the philanthropic work of Dale, Jr., so that it appears to be undefined and in his past: Dale was popular for his racing skills and his charity work. He has started the Dale, Jr., Foundation to help kids in need. More information about this aspect of his life would have supported the sub-title. Backmatter includes career statistics, glossary, further information (books and Internet), and index. In spite of the weaknesses, the color photographs are engaging and capture the sport's excitement and a book about stock car racing and NASCAR will thrill many young readers., Children's Literature
