OverviewThe Wellcome Witnesses to Twentieth Century Medicine series, published by The Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL, are edited transcripts of Witness Seminars at which significant figures in twentieth-century medicine discuss discoveries, debates and events in recent medical history. Volume 20, Cystic fibrosis , describes cystic fibrosis (CF), first clearly recognized in the 1930s as a disorder that inevitably led to death in early childhood from respiratory failure and malnutrition. Since that time, the introduction of antibiotic treatment and the means of improving nutrition have brought increasing hope to cystic fibrosis patients, so that increasing numbers of children are living on into adult life. Chaired by Professor John Walker-Smith, and attended by a group of leading experts in the field, this Witness Seminar included a discussion on the history and development of treatment as a result of the establishment of multidisciplinary teams working at specialist CF centres. Participants also discussed the role of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the identification in 1989 of the defective gene, making antenatal diagnosis possible and the suggestion that gene therapy might become feasible in the future. Those contributing include: Mrs Rosie Barnes, Sir John Batten, Sir Christopher Booth, Dr. Richard Boyd, Professor Alan Cuthbert, Mrs. Mary Dodd, Professor John Dodge, Mrs. Fran Duncan-Skingle, Professor Duncan Geddes, Dr. Mary Goodchild, Professor John Govan, Miss Tracy Humberstone, Dr. Anthony Jackson, Dr. James Littlewood, Dr. Anita MacDonald, Ms Susan Madge, Dr. Margaret Mearns, Dr. Archie Norman, Professor Sandy Raeburn, Dr. Kevin Southern, Dr. Philip Farrell, Dr. David Stableforth, Dr. Maurice Super, Professor John Walker-Smith (Chair), Professor Kevin Webb, Professor John Widdicombe.
