Suitable for Key Stage 2 & 3 (11-14 years old) -- Publisher: Gwasg Carreg GwalchReviewsCurriculum for Wales now weaves together the individual subjects. The old lessons don't exist. Language, literature, geography, the arts – all the humanities – are now one rich field. In this volume, we see that the land and the shores of Wales tell us a story. The cynefin is the starting point. Locality, catchment area, habitat - but there is also so much more than those in the depths and roots of the word cynefin. From there, we can extend to see the whole of Wales and all its diversity. Then, we find our country's place on the face of the earth and in the future of the world. FULL COLOUR -- Publisher: Gwasg Carreg Gwalch This is a brand-new volume for primary and secondary schools in Wales, offering comprehensive and up-to-date guidance for teachers who teach Geography as a subject, or through a combination of subjects within the Humanities and Environmental Studies department in Welsh schools. The publication of such an important volume in Welsh and English is a great advantage for us as we promote and develop an ambitious Curriculum for Wales for all pupils in our country. This is a volume specially commissioned by the Government’s Education Panel to meet the new requirements of the Curriculum in Wales in terms of teaching the Humanities in Key Stages 2 and 3, and there has been considerable anticipation for the title in order to fill the gap as a new, contemporary resource, which bridges primary and secondary work. The content was thoroughly tested by teachers and pupils in schools across Wales, and is fruit of the labour of a working group of consultants and experts in the field of Geography. No volume like this has appeared before in the entire history of education in Wales and it will enrich the learning and teaching resources in schools throughout the country. It is a worthy partner to History Grounded by Elin Jones (Carreg Gwalch, 2022) that was so well received by households and schools. The layout and style of the book is very similar, with the text flowing between the graphic work. The selection of pictures, maps, graphs and tables is up-to-date and relevant. Each subsection then opens with a key word: Home, Habitat, Country, Land, Diversity, Identity, State Governance and United. ‘Cynefin’ is a Welsh term which is defined by the Curriculum for Wales as ‘the place we feel we belong, where the people and landscape around us are familiar, and the sights and sounds are comforting to know.’ It’s not just the area we live in. From our ‘cynefin’ we can extend to see the whole of Wales and all its diversity. Then, finding our country’s place on the face of the earth and in the future of the world. Studying geography inspires a sense of wonder in learners about the world we live in and motivates them to create a sustainable future for everyone. Observing and analysing issues that affect landscapes locally, nationally and globally enables them to use their ability and skills for major challenges facing humanity. The content has been laid out in an orderly and effective manner and the guidance for teachers and pupils is clear and detailed, offering a sequence of cross-curricular themes and activities which bridge environmental studies between Key Stages 2 and 3. It offers continuity between all the geographical elements – physical characteristics, citizenship, the natural environment and means modeling and relating the local circumstances of the local school by studying specific examples from the book. What makes it a special volume is that it is completely unique to Wales and extends to include other subjects such as history, literature, identity, art and includes examples of other cultures and religions. The Curriculum for Wales now incorporates the traditional subjects throughout; cross-curricular thematic learning, with the subjects naturally interweaving, is the philosophy that now transitions from primary to secondary. For primary teachers the cross-curricular thematic method of learning is deeply rooted in the philosophy of learning and teaching, but now secondary school teachers are also moving to collaborate between History, Geography and Religious Education departments within the Humanities. With more and more emphasis on outdoor learning and educational visits this is a volume offering perfect guidance. Going on a fieldwork visit allows pupils to develop a strong sense of their own identity and well-being, but also to develop an understanding of other people’s identities and make connections with people, local histories, and other places in Wales and throughout the wider world. Inquiring, exploring and investigating different habitats inspires curiosity about the world, its past, present and future. The book confronts and discusses contemporary problems and hot topics of the day regarding the various habitats in Wales which are facing change. But it also shows that there are solutions, that there is a way forward. This new volume will certainly be welcomed and will facilitate the teachers’ planning work as they establish and incorporate the changes and geographical concepts of the Curriculum for Wales. -- Robin Williams @ www.gwales.com Curriculum for Wales now weaves together the individual subjects.
