Since 2012, he has been working on research projects linking key questions of cartography with theoretical approaches of cognitive psychology and methods of experimental psychology. In 2017, he was invited guest editor of a special issue Methods and Applications of Empirical Cartography (Journal: Kartographische Nachrichten - Journal of Cartography and Geographic Information). Dr Frank Dickmann is Professor of Cartography and GI Science at the Geography Department of Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). Since 2007, he has supervised many research projects on cognitive visualization topics. He and his team published many international papers in the field of cognitive cartography.
