Table of Contents

Introduction; Earliest Illusions - Images from 1760, the year of what is generally acknowledged as the first 'real' optical illusion.; Puzzle and Illusion Cards - The Victorians were very fond of optical illusions, and the medium prospered in this era.; Curious Content - Some optical illusions were definitely for adults only. This chapter celebrates these 'titillating' drawings. Many of them appear highly amusing to the twenty-first century viewer.; Ambiguous Imagery - Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's an ambiguous image that changes depending on how long you look at it, or which way up it is. Another hugely popular theme in the history of illusion.; Eye Tricks - Wheels that seem to move, shapes that shrink or grow on the page and other, generally more colourful illusions that fool the human brain.; Other Illusions - The illusion in advertising through the ages, illusions where you least expect them, and other curiosities.
