Niccoli's work makes a distinct contribution to our knowledge of a rather neglected area of study in French literature of the late sixteenth century - pastoral drama. Through an interesting and in-depth analysis of three major topoi of the genre - Cupid, the Golden Age and the Satyr - he shows clearly how the Bergerie of Antoine de Montchrestien is the epitome of the French Italianate pastoral drama.
