Shockey began his career as a secondary school teacher. After graduate school he has spent the past 20 years in higher education. His research interest has primarily focused on Ethnomathematics. As members of the North American Study Group on Ethnomathematics, Shockey and Dr. Rick Silverman began the Journal of Mathematics and Culture.
