OverviewThis revised and updated second edition offers practical guidelines for mental health professionals working with economically disadvantaged children and adolescents from African American, Asian American, Latino, and Native American backgrounds. Ian A. Canino and the late Jeanne Spurlock outline useful theoretical constructs; culturally appropriate assessment strategies; and effective, strengths-based treatment approaches. Clinicians should gain insight into the impact on young people of such social stressors as poverty and discrimination; the ways cultural and socioeconomic differences may come into play in assessment, diagnosis, and service delivery; and the importance of understanding family belief systems and cultural expectations about children's behaviour. Featuring a wealth of clinical vignettes, the second edition has been extensively updated to include recent findings from the literature, revised sections on diagnosis and treatment, and expanded coverage of assessment techniques. Additional attention is also devoted to such special populations as children raised in multiracial or multicultural environments, children in the juvenile justice system, and homeless and runaway children.
