Author Information

Wilhelm Grimm was a 19th century German author who, along with brother Jacob, published Grimms' Fairy Tales, a collection famous for stories like Cinderella and Rapunzel. HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805-75) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker. He published his first novel and his first fairy tales in 1835; thereafter he wrote over 150 more of these stories, which have become classics in many languages. A lonely man who never married, Andersen was also an anxious man; he loved travelling, but would carry a coil of rope with him in case of fire in his hotel. Although he originally addressed his fairy tales to children (and some would maintain he had a streak of childhood in his nature) he insisted they were 'for all ages', and the gentleness and humor that are their characteristics are recognized by everyone. Aesop was a Greek fabulist and storyteller credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables. Lauren Kratz had been a children's librarian for fifteen years, including at The New York Public Library in the Bronx and now the Los Angeles Public Library. Lauren manages the Octavia Lab, a DIY makerspace at the Los Angeles Public Library. She also works as a content developer for the 2022 and 2023 Modern Library Platinum Award Winner LibraryCall, where she develops and records original and diverse stories which children can listen to from around the country. LibraryCall is a small team of children's librarians, storytellers, writers, audio editors, and translators. Founded in 2020 by Lori Ayre, this diverse team is driven by a deep appreciation for the power and importance of storytelling. LibraryCall creates modern renditions of classic children's stories and fairy tales, adapts stories from various oral traditions, and even writes new stories. Their hope is that their varied and inclusive catalog will inspire the next generation to explore the world, appreciate the cultures around them, and perhaps even become storytellers themselves.
