The events of that night haunt her for decades as she works in the manor of Lord Devlin Englewood, a reclusive English aristocrat. Lord Englewood travels extensively and visits monthly, while Rebecca loves him from the shadows. But as the years slowly creep by, she loses hope of any future with him. But this manor and its master have many secrets and Madam Eva, the house manager, sees to the keeping of those with a scrupulous eye. In need of a new housekeeper in the upper floors, Eva promotes Rebecca, coaxing her from the shadows. Upon Devlin's return, she does not go unnoticed. Desire springs to passion and after another Tango, Devlin recognizes Rebecca as the flapper he danced with years ago. In a household with a strong class structure, Rebecca defies the rules to be with Devlin, though Eva warns her he would use her. And when he does not return after many promises, Rebecca is heartbroken and has to admit that Eva was right. Meanwhile, time is running out for Rebecca, who has a deadly secret of her own. If this secret is revealed it could separate Rebecca not only from Devlin and the manor but might result in Rebecca's untimely end.
