OverviewFor some of us, it's hard not to notice when people racially abuse or discriminate against each other. In the internet age, it's easier than ever to be more aware of how racism affects everyone around us. Sometimes it's so hard, in fact, that it can be difficult not to speak out when we witness racism. Racism is a system by which one group of people dominates over another due to their skin color or nationality. It's the systemic oppression of a group of people-a system that doesn't allow people of color or non-Christians to be as equal as the majority. Racism is called social discrimination or prejudice towards persons that are different from you based on their skin color, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Racism affects people's attitudes and behaviors toward each other. It can make us feel like we don't belong; it can lead to dehumanizing feelings toward others. It can affect how we treat others and prevent us from developing actual relationships with them. Racism can be found in behaviors and attitudes towards race, ethnicity, political affiliation, gender identity, and sexuality. It can involve violence, discrimination, and prejudice. We may deny that we have prejudices because we think that the other person is prejudiced against us. However, it's important to note that racism and other forms of discrimination go beyond one person or group making statements or behaving in ways that are prejudiced. Instead, racism is a system of domination where people engage in practices, laws, and policies that creates conditions for all people of color to be oppressed and discriminated against (i.e., slavery). Despite the fact that racism is not just about words, it can still be difficult to recognize. Racism is a serious problem, and we have to learn to recognize and deal with it. We need to work together in order to fight against it. Fighting racism requires us to look at our words and actions. If we want to make an effort to be inclusive and prevent discrimination, then we should start with ourselves. We should learn how to deal with our own feelings of exclusion or self-hatred so that we can change the way we treat other people and their cultures.
