Overview

Critical pedagogy is a transformative approach to education, moving beyond a simple transmission model of teaching where the teacher imparts predetermined knowledge to students. This participatory and empowering pedagogy can ensure classrooms become places of opportunity. Students are encouraged to critique their world and develop the essential attributes needed to become consciously aware, politically knowledgeable and socially responsible. Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion provides a refreshing perspective on English secondary education and discusses why critical pedagogy is more essential than ever for our marginalised and oppressed students. Realistic, pragmatic and sensitive suggestions enable the school leader and classroom teacher to consider critical pedagogy as an ongoing responsive, moral and political endeavour to fight social injustice. This book is a must-read for all those who value education as the practice of freedom and emancipation.

Reviews

Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is one of the best books written on the meaning, purpose and use of critical pedagogy in the classroom in the past few decades. Not only is it beautifully written, while being rigorous and accessible, but it also covers a wide area of crucial concerns regarding what critical pedagogy is and is not, especially in light of the myths and falsehoods used to attack it. Moreover, it is more than a defence and articulation regarding critical pedagogy - it is a text that every educator should read in order to evaluate and rethink their own classroom visions and practices as part of a broader practice of freedom and empowerment. This is a brilliant book and is sorely needed at a time when all levels of education are under attack by extremist groups. Education and critical pedagogy are crucial in a democracy and this book makes that case with clarity, urgency and passion. * Henry A. Giroux, Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy at McMaster University, Canada * Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is a thorough, robust and timely argument for the need for criticality in teaching, to empower students and teachers alike. Educators will undoubtedly benefit from this book. We need to engage with politics, history, academia and core values and this book offers vital guidance in all these areas. * Jeffrey Boakye, author, educator, speaker, broadcaster and journalist * Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is a refreshing, wide-ranging read with references locally and internationally that takes a practical and inspiring approach to critical pedagogy. * Evie Manning, co-artistic director, Common Wealth/Speakers Corner, Bradford *

Tait Coles' Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is an invaluable source for anyone involved or interested in adopting a rights-based perspective when thinking about their teaching practice. The narrative is engaging, absorbing and accessible, and the text rattles along at a pace that feels comfortable and authentic. The book provides the perfect opportunity to take stock of where we are as a profession. More importantly, it suggests that we are in control of our future destiny and that we as practitioners can strengthen the idea of rights-led practice if we value the contribution of the young people we support. Coles asks some very difficult questions of the reader, but the result is a text that is robust in its assertions, and sound in terms of ideology and philosophy. I can't stress enough how important this book is and how timely it feels. * Brian Mitchell, School of Social Sciences, University of Bradford * Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is one of the best books written on the meaning, purpose and use of critical pedagogy in the classroom in the past few decades. Author Information

Tait Coles has been teaching science for 20 years. In that time he has had the privilege of learning with, and from, hundreds of young people, many of whom would be classed as having a social or economic disadvantage. Tait is currently a deputy headteacher at a school in Bradford. He has experience of leading on teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment, quality assurance, behaviour and attitudes, as well as initial teacher education. Tait has been described as 'a classroom maverick and a respected radical of modern teaching' (Ian Gilbert, Independent Thinking, 2014). He works relentlessly to ensure that every student achieves or exceeds their academic potential, but he knows that education is much more than this. Tait has seen first-hand the influence that critical pedagogy has had on his students, enabling them to develop a sustained social awareness and a critical consciousness.
