OverviewOver a 35 year period 17 overseas cricket elevens visited America to play first-class matches against the greatest cricket team in the States, Philadelphia. The first of those contests was against the Australians in 1878. However, it was to be seven years before the next international team arrived to play a first-class match in Philadelphia. In the meantime, in an attempt to improve the standard of their cricket team Philadelphia arranged a series of first-class matches against the rest of the USA. When the international elevens began to tour more regularly these ""internal"" American cricket matches ended. However, between 1883 and 1894, some high quality games were staged. This is the story of those games, eight matches in total, a largely forgotten but important stage in the development of the Philadelphia cricket team.
