JOAN C. BEAL is Professor of English Language and Director of the National Centre for English Cultural Tradition, University of Sheffield, UK. Her recent publications include English in Modern Times and Language and Region. KAREN P. CORRIGAN is a Personal Reader in Linguistics and English Language at Newcastle University, UK. She has held lectureships at University College, Dublin and the Universities of Edinburgh and York, and a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship.
