Each entry in the Crayola Colorful Biomes series briefly discusses the biome, offers bits of information about some of the diverse animals and plants shown, and points out colors in the accompanying photographs. Although the large-print text is written to be accessible to young readers, Bullard doesn't shy away from the occasional challenging word such as algae, camouflaged, deciduous, or predator when it's the best choice available and a useful term for junior naturalists to know. Each book includes a simplified world map that highlights regions where the particular biome can be found. The many photos are well-chosen and beautifully reproduced. Desert Colors includes information on how animals' coloring can often conceal them within their surroundings but notes that certain prominent markings will actually warn off predators. Mary Lindeen has been interested in learning about the world around her since she was a little girl growing up on a farm in Iowa. She thought learning new things was so much fun that she became an elementary school teacher. She loved sharing books with her students and wanted to know more about how those books were made, so she became an editor. Now she reads, writes, and edits children's books and still loves learning new things. She and her son live in Minnesota and enjoy traveling together whenever and wherever they can, including making frequent trips back to that farm in Iowa.
