Overview

When children are growing up and have a clear direction of where they hope to travel in their future career, it is wonderful. If they are lucky enough to have been given the capabilities to accomplish their goal, then that is very fortunate. It can be as difficult for parents watching the life path of a determined youngster unfold, as it is for those with children who have no idea where they are heading. When disappointments occurred and blocks were constantly thrown into my daughter's path, it certainly brought home the fact that ambition alone was not enough to succeed in the tough world of medicine. It was relentless drive, stamina and determination that ensured her success in an ultimately rewarding career choice, eventually reaching the pinnacle of her profession and becoming a consultant surgeon. This is an inspirational story, of how an ambitious student overcomes all the obstacles and pitfalls on this long and arduous journey into the world of surgery. From a parent's perspective, I cover the steps that led to my daughter's achievement, with all the fun and adventure, plus the many challenges that she faced on entering this male dominated profession. The great pride and joy that comes with watching my only daughter reach such lofty heights in her career at such a young age. But also at times the sleepless nights and heartache such a career choice brought to her family along the way.
