He has previously with three local English police forces, the National Crime Squad and the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit. His police career covers work in the uniform, investigation, intelligence and covert policing arenas. His academic career has included a Fulbright Police Research Fellowship at Georgetown University, Washington DC in 2001. He has published a number of research and theoretical papers on various aspects of policing, police management and international law enforcement co-operation. Superintendent Karen Harfield is currently Head of Strategic Development, Warwickshire Police, having been Head of Intelligence for the force between 2001-2004, in which capacity she was the force registrar for covert human intelligence sources and oversaw a number of covert investigations. She has previously served with the National Crime Squad and working with both this and other agencies has operational experience of covert investigation at local, national and international levels.
