This is the first edition of County and City Extra where data have been available to replace almost all of the detailed data from the 2000 census. *recently released data from the Census of Governments and and the Economic Census Some examples of facts found in the 19th Edition of County and City Extra: *According to preliminary results from the 2010 census, state populations ranged from over 37.2 million people in California to 563,626 in Wyoming *Arizona was the 16th most populous state in 2010, jumping from 20th in 2000. *The U.S. median age increased from 35.3 years in 2000 to 36.8 in 2009. *Nearly 1,400 counties experienced declines in their labor force from 2008 to 2009. *Over 1,000 counties had an unemployment rate greater than 10 percent in 2009, compared to only 125 counties in 2008. *Forty-nine metropolitan areas grew by 20 percent or more between 2000 and 2009. *Seven out of the 10 metropolitan areas with the highest unemployment rates were in California. *Among the largest cities, San Francisco had the highest median housing value at $796,700 in 2009 up from $396,400 in 2000. Buffalo and Detroit had the lowest median values. *Based on the 2010 census, Texas will gain 4 seats, Florida will gain 2 seats, while Washington, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Georgia, and South Carolina will each gain one seat in the House of Represenatives. *Although the population of Louisiana's 2nd district had grown by over 29 percent from 2007 to 2009, it remains the least populous congressional district in the nation due to outmigration after Hurricane Katrina.

Deirdre A. Gaquin has been a data use consultant to private organizations, government agencies, and universities for over 25 years. Prior to that, she was Director of Data Access Services at Data Use & Access Laboratories, a pioneer in private sector distribution of federal statistical data. A former President of the Association of Public Data Users, Ms. Gaquin has served on numerous boards, panels, and task forces concerned with federal statistical data and has worked on four decennial censuses. She holds a Master of Urban Planning (MUP) degree from Hunter College.
