OverviewThis text provides a state-of-the-art treatment of the dominant theories and techniques of counseling and psychotherapy from a rehabilitation perspective. The opening chapter provides an historical context for understanding theories of counseling and psychotherapy, including definitions and terminology, and the importance and efficacy of counseling in professional practice. Written by recognized experts in their content areas, the book focuses on two of the many primary knowledge domains underlying credentialing in rehabilitation counseling: Career, Courseling, Assessment and Consultation, and Counseling Theories, Techniques, and Applications. They explain each theoretical approach and their applications to assist people with disabilities in rehabilitation settings. Case examples used throughout highlight rehabilitation-specific problems. Basic techniques and selected professional issues related to practice are also presented. Intended for practitioners, upper level undergraduates and graduate students in rehabilitation and psychology, and in other rehabilitation health care disciplines such as nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language, recreation, and social work.
