Cosmic Rays in Magnetospheres of the Earth and Other Planets

Overview

The monograph describes behavior of cosmic rays (CR) mostly in magnetosphere of the Eartha (TM)s and concisely of some other planets. This problem became very important last time both theoretically because it closely connected with the Eartha (TM)s Magnetosphere Physics (by CR may be checked different magnetospheric models) and practically (CR determined sufficient part of space weather effects on satellites and aircrafts). The book contains eight chapters, in which are considered history on CR geomagnetic effects discovery and its importance for determining of the nature of CR (energetic charged particles or gamma rays, see Chapter 1), the first explanations of geomagnetic effects in the frame of dipole approximation of the Eartha (TM)s magnetic field (Chapter 2), trajectory computations of cutoff rigidities, transmittance functions, asymptotic directions, and acceptance cones in real geomagnetic field with taking into account higher harmonics (Chapter 3), CR latitude-longitude surveys on ships, trains, tracks, planes, balloons and satellites for determining real CR intensity planetary distribution and its changing with time (Chapters 4 and 5), geomagnetic time variations of CR caused by changing of internal sources of the main Eartha (TM)s magnetic field and variable magnetospheric current systems (Chapter 6), models of the disturbed Eartha (TM)s magnetosphere and their checking by galactic and solar CR (Chapter 7), behavior of CR in atmospheres and magnetospheres of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter (Chapter 8). The book ends with a list providing about one thousand full references, a discussion on future developments and unsolved problems, as well as Object index and Appendix. This bookwill be useful for experts and students in CR research, Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Magnetosphere Physics, and Space Physics.
