Author Information

Florian Heindler (born 1986) is assistant professor at the Faculty of Law at Sigmund Freud University Vienna, Austria (since 2016).* He graduated from Vienna University in 2009 (master's degree in law, mag. iur.) and 2011 (master's degree in philology of Slavonic languages, mag. phil.) and completed his doctoral studies in law (dr. iur.) in 2016. From 2013 to 2016, he worked as an in-house lawyer for a major Austrian bank, focusing particularly on questions of international contract law and finance. In addition, he was appointed project head for the implementation of the U.S. Foreign Account Compliance Act and the Common Reporting Standard. From 2009 to 2013, Florian worked as a teaching and research associate at the Department of European, International and Comparative Law at the University of Vienna. He regularly lectures at Masaryk University in Brno and the University of Vienna and has also taught students at the University of Aberdeen (postgraduate distance learning), Moscow State University, the University of Lucerne, Stockholm University, the Belarusian State University, the Pan-European University in Bratislava and the University of Salzburg. He has acquired additional practical experience through his work in international law firms, including Specht and CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz attorneys at law, and contributions to research projects. Florian was recently involved in a research project funded by the Russian Central Bank on legal aspects of structured finance products. Earlier in 2016, he was involved in drafting the Austrian legal aspects report for the Chinese 'Belt and Road' initiative. His main research areas are Private International Law, Comparative Law, Private Law, Financial Market Law and legal education. Together with Prof. Bea Verschraegen, he is set to co-author the fourth edition of a comprehensive commentary of the Private International Law rules applicable in Austria for the country's prestigious legal 'Rummel Commentary'. In 2016, he presented the Austrian contribution to EUPILLAR, the EU-funded research project on European Union Private International Law: Legal Application in Reality, at a conference at LSE London. In autumn 2016, he co-organized an international conference on conflicts of law with regard to banking transactions and consumer protection, at which he also presented a paper on distance sales of financial products to consumers, and is the co-editor of the volume of conference papers, which appeared in June 2017. He is also the author of numerous articles in Austrian, German and Russian journals. In June 2017, Florian became the President of the Interdisciplinary Association for Comparative and Private International Law (IACPIL). In 2016, he became an associate fellow of the International Academy of the Belt and Road (IABR), Hong Kong.
