Overview

This volume spans six generations of poets born in Sicily beginning in the 1940s. Fifty-five authors, many still living and working there, are represented from a wide variety of regions, some writing in Sicilian and others writing primarily in Italian. Ana Ilievska and Pietro Russo have selected the poets and characteristic examples of their work. The translations from Italian to English by Ana Ilievska are presented on facing pages. Poems in Sicilian include an Italian version below the Sicilian text. In his introduction to the volume, Antonio Sichera, professor of Contemporary Italian Literature at the University of Catania, asks ""whether there really is such a category as contemporary Sicilian poetry."" The editors answer this question affirmatively. The poets in this anthology share a flow of verse that moves through lyrical eruptions and layers of silence. Author Information

Dr. Ana Ilievska is Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center and Lecturer in the Department of French and Italian at Stanford University. A comparatist specializing in Italian, Lusophone, and Balkan studies, her current book project ""Deep Tech: Literature, Southern Thought, and the Question Concerning Technology"" focuses on the relationship between literature, the industrial revolution, and technology from the perspective of southern Europe and the Mediterranean. She has published articles on Luigi Pirandello, Eça de Queirós, Fernando Pessoa, and Luso-African writers, in addition to numerous translations and public scholarship on poetry, noise, the public humanities, and the culture of Silicon Valley. Pietro Russo was born in Catania, where he lives. He teaches Italian to foreigners at a school. He is interested in contemporary poetry and has written essays on Vittorio Sereni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Milo De Angelis. He collaborates with literary newspapers, magazines, websites and blogs. He is also responsible for the cultural activities of the Dante Alighieri Society (Catania Committee). So far he has published two books of poetry: A questa vertigine (2016), which won the ""Violani Landi Prize"" for First Work, and a collection in Sicilian dialect Eppuru i stiddi fanu scrusciu (2022).
