OverviewThe book examines the contemporary politics and governance of Bangladesh and their crises and challenges. As an independent state, Bangladesh started its journey as a constitutional, secular, democratic, multiparty, parliamentary republic. Sheik Mujibur Rahman came to the power with immense popularity as the first Prime Minister in 1970 but experienced turbulent times. Bangladesh retains some elements of democracy, for instance: a multiparty party form of government, periodic elections, a vibrant civil society, a growing bourgeoisie, digitalization of access to information, citizen charter, and community empowerment programs. Nevertheless, government has suffered decency within the absence of strong institutions to confirm the rule of law, accountability, and transparency in Bangladesh.
