Overview

"In infectious disease management, antibacterial agents have long been viewed as pivotal tools in the relentless battle against microorganisms. However, the escalating threat of antibacterial drug resistance has emerged as a formidable challenge to global health. Contemporary Approaches to Mitigating Antibacterial Drug Resistance delves into the heart of this critical issue, exploring the mechanisms, consequences, and innovative strategies to counteract the surge of resistance, a phenomenon becoming increasingly pervasive and threatening worldwide. Antibacterial drug resistance, a pressing public health concern, transcends geographical boundaries. In regions where antibiotic accessibility and overuse prevail, resistance rates soar, giving rise to the ominous ""superbugs."" This book unravels the intricacies of drug resistance, examining its impact on infectious disease management, healthcare economics, and societal well-being. The exploration begins with a foundational understanding of antibacterial drug resistance, navigating through the intricate mechanisms that drive its rapid proliferation. Environmental and genetic factors, often overlooked, are dissected for their roles in fostering resistance. The book explores the interplay of antibacterial drugs with micro-biodiversity, shedding light on the indirect repercussions on human and environmental ecosystems. The primary audience, encompassing undergraduate and postgraduate students, medical practitioners, academicians, and researchers, will find in-depth insights into emerging therapeutic targets and recent advances in drug development. The secondary audience, including authorities in antibacterial drug resistance and institutional libraries, will discover a valuable resource addressing the multifaceted dimensions of this global menace. The book surveys various strategies, from beta-lactamase inhibitors to nanotechnology-based approaches. It spotlights the potential of natural products, algal derivatives, and lantibiotics, offering a glimpse into the diverse arsenal humanity can harness against antibacterial resistance. Computational biology, bibliometric analyses, and even the intersection with the COVID-19 virus are explored, providing a holistic perspective. The urgency of a coordinated global response, as the World Health Organization advocates, reverberates through these pages. As the world grapples with the increasing threat of antibacterial drug resistance, this book is an indispensable guide, offering a roadmap towards a future where these ""wonder drugs"" remain effective guardians in our fight against infectious diseases."

Author Information

I am working as Associate Professor at Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy, Yamuna Nagar, Haryana (India) since Mar. 02, 2021. I had taught B. Pharm., M. Pharm. and Pharm. D. students and supervised 07 M. Pharm. (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) students in the research area of Drug Design and Medicinal Chemistry. I am currently guiding 03 Ph.D. students in the area of Drug Design and Discovery. My present areas of research include structure-based drug design and medicinal chemistry of matrix metallo proteinase (MMP2 and MMP9) inhibitors as anticancer agents, antibacterial drug resistance (NDM-1), glucokinase activators as anti-diabetic agents, aldose reductase inhibitors for diabetic complications, PPAR agonists for treatment of metabolic syndrome, multi-potent anti-Alzheimer's agents, selective PDE4 and PDE7 inhibitors as anti-inflammatory agents and environmental chemistry. I had published a total of 80 articles in national and international journals of repute, 11 book chapters, 5 books, 5 patents and various poster presentations (15) at several conferences (both national and international). Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy, Yamuna Nagar. · Pharmaceutical Chemistry M. Pharm., PhD, PDCR Kunal Nepali is an Assistant Professor in the School of Pharmacy, Taipei Medical University, Taiwan. Kunal joined the School of Pharmacy, Taipei Medical University as an Assistant Professor on 17-01-2019 and is currently handling independent research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) as well as Taipei Medical University. He has expertise spanning medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis with ten years of experience in a broad range of drug development projects. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the year 2012 from ISF College of Pharmacy, Moga, Punjab, India. During his doctoral studies, he worked under the supervision of Dr. K.L Dhar, a pioneer organic and medicinal chemist of India, and systematically explored various areas of rational drug design and natural product chemistry. He then joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, at Guru Nanak Dev University as an Assistant Professor and served in that capacity until mid-2014. Along with the teaching assignments, he was actively involved in research projects and explored various areas of Catalytic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. With an overwhelming stint as a teacher and a researcher, he was determined to expand the horizon of his expertise by gaining international exposure. To accomplish this, he moved to Taipei Medical University, Taiwan in October 2014 as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratories of Professor Jing Ping Liou. His research work at the post-doctoral level involved the design of new chemical entities with desired biological activities and the development/optimization of synthetic procedures for the preparation of compounds along with structure-activity relationship studies. It was his exemplary research work at the post-doctoral level that earned him a highly competitive faculty position at the School of Pharmacy, Taipei Medical University. Overall, his research endeavors employ a rational structure-based drug design approach that lies at the interface of chemistry and biology to treat cellular processes dealing with chronic molecular stress. He made a significant contribution to the field of Medicinal Chemistry throughout his post-doctoral tenure and earned an Outstanding Post-Doctoral Researcher award, from Taipei Medical University five consecutive times 2014-2018. He is the author of a good number of research/review articles and is an ad-hoc reviewer of various reputed journals in the field of biomedical sciences. He has also received various recognitions and awards as a reviewer for Medicinal Research Reviews, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry Letter, and others Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy: Yamuna Nagar, Haryana, IN 2017-10-01 to present | Associate Professor (Pharmacy) Dr Arun Lal Srivastav is working as Assistant Professor at Chitkara University, Himachal Pradesh (India). He has obtained his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi. He has also done Post Doctoral Research at National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. He is currently involved in the teaching of Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and Disaster Management to the undergraduate engineering students. His research interests include water treatment, river ecosystem, climate change, soil health maintenance, phytoremediation and waste management. He has published 72 research papers in various prestigious Journals of the Elsevier, Springer, IWA, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, Indian Chemical Society along with in prestigious conferences and book chapters. He has also filed 19 patents. He has published 4 books with Elsevier on river ecosystem conservation, renewable energy, urban water crisis
