Overview

Here are musical scores by 30 composers from around the world in a single, accessible collection encompassing concert and religious music as well as jazz, pop, experimental, and cross-over. Among the compositions in the Anthology are an organ work, ""Fantasy on Sacred Head"", by the American Emma Lou Diemer; ""Blow Flute: Answer Echoes in Antique Lands Dying"" by Australian Jennifer Fowler; ""Garden of Joy and Sorrow for harp, flute, and viola"", by Sofia Gubaidulina, a native of the Tatar Republic; the song ""Coat of Many Colors"" by Dolly Parton; Mary Lou's ""Mass"" (commissioned by the Vatican) by American Mary Lou Williams, whose compositional style evolved from her jazz roots; and ""The Journey of Matuku Moana"" for solo cello by Gillian Whitehead of New Zealand.With its broad spectrum of genres and national voices, the Anthology is an excellent teaching resource for music history, appreciation, and analysis. Each work is introduced by a short biography of the composer, including the formative influences on her life, role models, obstacles encountered, the recognition she has attained, bibliographic references, and discographies.
