To my mind it is one of those little books which will go down to posterity as a spiritual classic of rare worth. --Father Northcote. We know of no book in which the question so often asked in these days, 'What is Mysticism?' is so simply, clearly and ably answered as in this. Without the ambiguity, circumlocution and fine writing of the many non-Catholic works on the subject, this treatise goes at once to the root of the matter, and is eminently practical and lucid. --The Sacred Heart Messenger. Highly spiritual and also practical. --Irish Catholic. From the first chapter the mind is gripped and is led onward with increasing interest till the climax in that never-to-be-forgotten last chapter on 'God is Charity' -- Poor Souls' Friend. THE MYSTICAL LIFE This little book upon a great subject is full of matter, radiant with light, nobly encouraging... From his lofty definition of the mystical life as a life of intimate, sustained, conscious union with God, Dom L. never departs or looks down. --The Universe. There is a very real desire abroad for closer knowledge of, and a more intimate life with, the unseen, in fact with God. Dom L points to the right door and gives us the key of it, by which we may pass into that life... It is not something esoteric... This book is not one just to read through and lay aside. It is a book to live by and work with. --The Catholic Review. We welcome the book as an effort to make men realize how abundant are the means whereby we can attain to the higher forms of spiritual life. --Ushaw Magazine. A treatise of great value. --The Sacred Heart Messenger. The author emphasizes still more strongly the right, nay, the duty, of all Christians to become mystics, admitting to this category all who live up to their Christian profession as sketched in the Gospel. --The Month. The book is instinct with sublime thoughts and deep religious feeling, yet ever preserving its balance by sound common sense and trained reasoning. --Irish Ecclesiastical Record. MYSTICISM, TRUE and FALSE The book is thoroughly trustworthy as well as devout and edifying. --Catholic Book Notes. In line with the teaching of the Popes... Calculated to enlarge the spiritual life of thousands... the conclusion is admirable. --The Tablet. Author InformationDom Savinien Louismet, OSB, 1858-1926, was born in Sens, France. He was raised in a devout Catholic family, and attended choir school at Sens and the Petit Séminaire at Auxerre. He became a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of La Pierrequi-Vire, making his profession in 1877 at the age of 19. He was ordained a priest in 1882, then sent to the Benedictine mission in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). He served there for 13 years, but returned to Europe for health reasons. In 1902 he was made a temporary superior of Buckfast Abbey, where he remained for the rest of his life, while undertaking a fruitful ministry in preaching missions and retreats, and in writing books and articles for various periodicals. He passed on to that perfect Contemplation of the Beatific Vision, to which he was so devoted and loved so much, at Buckfast Abbey, on Jan. 19, 1926.
