Author Information

Jim Allen FIOSH RSP is Managing Director, HASCOM NETWORK LTD and Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the Construction Specialist Group, IOSH (London branch). HASCOM NETWORK LTD is a health and safety consultancy founded in 1991 under the chairmanship of Allan St John Holt, one of the leading and most authoritative figures on health and safety matters in the United Kingdom. The Company, which has offices in Southampton, has developed its successful core services by providing crucial, high-grade health and safety information whenever and wherever it is most needed. That is as the heart of the operation but, in addition, the company provides a full range of consultancy services in occupational health and safety covering training, workplace inspections, expert opinions and advice, accident investigation, auditing and assessment and external 'competent person' appointment. Helping people and organisations to comply with the law and demonstrate their competence are fundamental to HASCOM's role. Practical assistance is furnished in many ways: HASCOM helps create safety policies, writes safety manuals and takes the pain out of preparing risk assessments. Assisting clients to understand and react to the implications of new health and safety legislation - and suggesting cost-effective solutions - in an important part of the programme. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 both illustrate the need for sound and timely support. Through its Adviceline, which reflects the company's information - based philosophy, HASCOM is linked to thousands of businesses throughout the UK, providing immediate access to the help they need on health and safety matters of concern. The Adviceline operates from the company's Information Centre in Southampton and is staffed by full-time friendly professional advisers, all qualified to the UK's highest standard. He has also lectured widely in the USA, the Far East and Australia on health and safety matters. Twice President of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), and a Fellow of the Institution, he is a Registered Safety Practitioner.
