Conquest of California [1896 Reprint]: Capture of Sonoma by Bear Flag Men June 14, 1846. Raising of the American Flag in Monterey by Commodore John D. Sloat, July 7, 1846

Overview

The Bear-flag rule once lasted twenty-two days only-from June 14th to July 5th. In this time Sonoma, San Rafael, San Francisco and Sutter's Fort were occupied by them, in fact all of North California. From July 5th to July 9th, Captain Fremont was in control. From July 29th to January 14, 1847, Commodore Stockton was in command. The treaty of Caunuenga completed the conquest on the 12th of January, 1847, just six months after the raising of the Bear Flag in Sonoma.
