From interpersonal to organizational to societal contexts, this book equips students with the tools to manage conflict effectively. With a strong focus on the underlying causes of conflict and on the role of communication and culture, this book helps students understand how different perspectives shape conflict and its resolution, enhancing both professional and personal relationships. In this newly revised edition, in addition to updated scholarship, there is new material on emotions, domestic violence, and post-conflict analysis, expanded discussions on critical topics such as the effects of conflict on children, intercultural marriages, and the role of artificial intelligence in negotiation and mediation. Enhanced coverage on power dynamics, global climate negotiations, community divisions, effective apologies and strategies for reconciliation add further value. Each chapter begins with a compelling vignette to illustrate key concepts, followed by in-depth discussions and real-life case studies from the author's extensive career as a mediator, making complex concepts engaging and relatable. These real-world applications make it easier to apply the concepts to students' everyday lives, improving not just their professional relationships but also their personal ones. Reviews

""This text explores the under-pinning factors that play into conflict in interpersonal, organizational, and societal level context, and gives students the tools to manage conflict in their lives. ...[My students] love [the book], especially the case studies with different real-world examples."" Lindsey A. Sherrill, Department of Management & Marketing, University of North Alabama ""[This text] is a great introduction to thinking about the role of communication and culture in how conflict is conceptualized and resolved. It suggests that we focus on the true causes of conflict and think through ideal resolutions with both short and long-term goals in mind."" Cheri Ketchum, Department of Communication, University of Arizona Global Campus ""The chapters' scope and their approach to engaging the reader were particularly noteworthy. I would describe the manner in which the content was presented as a skillful blend of simplicity and depth. What stood out for me was the feeling of agency I experienced, as I had several ""eureka"" moments while connecting with the provided examples.."" Oluwagbemiga Dasylva, Carter School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University ""I was impressed with the thoroughness of the content. ... I thought the examples and case studies were interesting and current. Furthermore, I believe my students would benefit from a chapter devoted to apologies, forgiveness and reconciliation (quite frankly, anyone would!). I thought the chapters were well written and easy to read but not watered down. ...I think anyone regardless of their major/career aspirations would benefit by reading this book."" Bob Yonker, The Neff College of Business and Innovation, Department of Management, The University of Toledo ""For almost 50 years, the author has conducted research, consulted with organizations, and educated students about conflict and communication. His experience and expertise are evident in the second edition of this book. The foundations of the book are rooted in the theoretical history of conflict and the discipline of communication studies. Dr. Jandt's knowledge and expertise are evident in this textbook. There is much to value and areas that would be beneficial to students."" Barbie Chambers, Department of Professional Communication, Texas Tech University ""I appreciated this author discussing more about non-western style research literature in dealing with conflict. The discussion of power is also really crucial too."" Sachiyo Shearman, Department of Communication, East Carolina University
