Confessions of a Catholic Homeschool Mom

Overview

Confession is good for the soul--and necessary after dealing with an 11-year-old who hates math! Confessions of a Catholic Homeschool Mom is all about finding the strength to get through the challenges of schooling your own brats...brood. Karen Salstrom, mom of seven children, invites frazzled moms everywhere to join her on a journey into homeschooling. Here, you can find answers to common questions: What is homeschooling? Is it worthwhile? Can I do it? How can I do it? Where does this fit into family life? And most of all, how do I keep my spirituality... and my sanity? Though written tongue-in-cheek, chapters unfold around the Sacrament of Reconciliation from ""Examination of Conscience"" all the way to ""Penance and Absolution."" Full of her own personal stories as well as practical advice, Confessions of a Catholic Homeschool Mom is an accessible tool for moms who now more than ever find themselves swimming in the unfamiliar waters of homeschooling.

Reviews

Confessions of a Catholic Homeschool Mom by Karen Salstrom is an invitation to join her on her homeschooling journey. Her exploration of the basic questions -- What is homeschooling? Is it worthwhile? How can I do it? Can I do it? Where does this fit into family life? -- is delightful and insightful. Highly recommended. Kimberly Hahn, Author of the Life-Nurturing Love series, including Legacy of Love: Biblical Wisdom for Parenting Teens and Young Adults Originally planning to homeschool to first grade, and now looking into the future, this book is a breath of fresh air! I'm not the only one to have doubts about my energy or ability to pick curriculum, or teach hard subjects that I struggled through, or afraid of wasting money on the wrong curriculum. Karen faces all these fears, and sets me free! I loved the writing style. Comparing each roadblock to Confession made it approachable and delightful. A quick but powerful read, it left me encouraged and empowered! Jessica McAfee, FertilityCare practitioner, public speaker and author, and wife of Shaun McAfee, author and founder of EpicPew Karen's book is a reminder that God can make masterpieces out of our messes. Sometimes we just have to be willing to trust and get messy. As one who is easily distracted, her discussion on vocation particularly hits home with me! The same Catholic life lessons she harkens to definitely apply to homeschooling. We fall down, ask forgiveness, do our penance, dust ourselves off, then get back up again and trust, trust, trust! You can do this! One Mad Mom, Catholic blogger with Foeduscatholic.com In this little book, Karen Salstrom helped me to see that I am not alone in my homeschooling misgivings. She writes with great wit and wonderful candor about many of the things you and I, Catholic homeschooling moms, experience in this fantastic and unpredictable journey. It is short, sweet, and edifying. If you need a good reminder that, with the good Lord's grace, you can succeed at this homeschool endeavor, read this book ASAP! Valerie Staples, Homeschooling mom and wife of Tim Staples I loved the confession analogy; most of us like 'to-do' lists, but more of us are drawn to 'What NOT TO DO!' -- Good technique. The writing style is friendly and approachable, not too studious and not too fluffy. The examples are clear and not overly wordy. Karen revealed enough about her kids and still protected their deeper privacy. Rose Sweet, Catholic author and speaker
