Concrete Structures: Stresses and Deformations: Analysis and Design for Sustainability, Fourth Edition

Overview

This text presents the most effective analysis for predicting the true stresses and deflections of concrete structures, accounting for creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressed reinforcement. Sustainability has become a major requirement in modern structures, which need to sustain satisfactory service over a longer life. It is not rare to specify a life span of 100 years for infrastructure such as bridges. This complete and wide-ranging study of stresses and deformations of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures focuses on design methods for avoiding the deflections and cracking that diminish serviceability. This fourth edition has a new emphasis on designing for serviceability. It has been comprehensively updated. It now includes seventy solved examples and fifty instructive problems with answers given at the end of the book. An accompanying website contains design calculation programs, which allow interactive data input. Independent of codes of practice, the book is universally applicable, and is especially suitable for practising engineers and graduate students.

Reviews

From reviews of previous editions: This graduate level textbook is strongly recommended for practicing civil engineers and university level engineering libraries. The second edition of this work (1994) is widely held by academic libraries and there is sufficient new content in the third edition to warrant purchasing a copy of this newly revised title. - www.e-streams.com This book would be extremely useful to civil engineering students, researchers and practicising engineers, especially those who are involved with statically indeterminate prestressed and composite structures. - The Structural Engineer Overall a highly recommendable book which I would like to see on the desk of every student because of its good didactic structure and in the hands of every practising engineer because of its general applicability. - Beton und Stahlbetonbau This is a well presented book with a well balanced content. It should be useful to graduate students, research workers and practising engineers, particularly those involved with statistically indeterminate prestressed and composite structures. - International Journal of Fatigue ... a complete and wide-ranging study of the stress and deformations of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, partially prestressed concrete and composite beams, slabs and frames. ... All in all, this is a worthwhile book for structural design engineers needing to know more about the effects of creep of concrete on the stresses and deformations of structures. - Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering ... this is a well-written textbook that successfully and extensively treats the critical subject of deformational behavior and long-term performance of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. - Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering
