Hustead, and Rachel E. MannReviewsThis highly accessible, thorough, and well-written book presents a wealth of information without overwhelming the reader with excessive material. The editorial style of this textbook is remarkably consistent, even in the 10 chapters written by or with other authors. In addition, the authors are to be commended for the writing itself, which is characterized by clarity, careful definition of terms, and conciseness. Reading the entire volume provides an extensive review of the field, but one can select any of the chapters and emerge with a comprehensive overview of the specific area under discussion....This excellent volume is a fine resource for information about all aspects of suicide....I hope that this volume will help us to provide our students with more thorough training in the understanding, assessment, and treatment of suicide. -- Journal of Clinical Psychiatry
This book? Grab it! It is an indispensable addition to any mental health professional's library. Although called a textbook, it could as well be termed an encyclopedia (except Evans and Farberow already claimed that title[1]). It is a compendium of knowledge regarding suicide and is the best work of its nature I have read. In addition to its remarkable breadth, it has numerous other strengths: the authors are all unquestioned authorities, and the book is more authored than edited....It is a marvelous work, a tour de force on suicide, and a text or reference work to be cherished. The authors indicate their wish for feedback from their readers and their intent to frequently update the book; they should be applauded for both. -- American Journal of Psychiatry
Case material is presented in each chapter to illustratethe research and theory under discussion. Going beyond the usual reference list, the authors include 'Further Reading' sections at the end of each chapter that briefly describe the content of the recommended material. The book is replete with tables, charts, graphs, and vital statistics based on recent data. The writing is clear and scholarly. The authors do not claim to have come up with solutions, but do provide much food for thought. This is a multidisciplinary, comprehensive volume, and a big one at 650 pages. It is an interesting resource reflecting many different points of view. -- The Arts in Psychotherapy
It is a tribute to the coming of age of suicidology that a volume of this quality can be written....Maris and colleagues' Comprehensive Textbook of Suicidology synthesizes state-of-the-art findings across behavioral and social sciences....The book is enriched by suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter, considered summaries, and illustrated case examples, including some of well-known suicides....should be read by all those who provide care, regardless of professional identity or specialty training. -- Psychiatric Services
.,. a signal contribution to suicidology....a carefully laid out work, with a full presentation of the literature and controversies in suicidology....This is a beautifully done work. A copy should be available in every setting in which patient self-injury is a concern. -- Journal of the American Medical Association
This is truly an encyclopedic textbook in its scope, comprehensiveness, and feeling of intellectual excitement. It is my essential book. --Edwin S. Shneidman, PhD, Professor of Thanatology Emeritus, UCLA, Founder, American Association of Suicidology
Maris, Berman, and Silverman are to be congratulated on this important new initiative. Although there have been many books published in the field of suicidology, a comprehensive textbook has been lacking. All readers who want to have a wealth of knowledge about suicide and suicidal behaviors will greatly value having this book on their shelves. Its richness, breadth, and internal consistency make it an excellent resource for clinicians and academicians. --J. John Mann, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons; Chief, Department of Neuroscience, New York State Psychiatric Institute
A longstanding gap on your bookshelf can now be filled.
